Biography

Lisa Miller Faulkenberry is a contemporary painter whose work explores the beauty of the natural world, the spirit of the West, and the quiet connections between people, animals, and the landscape. Working primarily in oil and acrylic, she blends contemporary painterly realism with abstraction, using light, atmosphere, simplified forms, and intuitive brushwork to evoke emotion, memory, and a sense of peace.

Originally from New York, Lisa developed a deep appreciation for horses and the natural world while growing up in the peaceful countryside of the East Coast. She has called Bakersfield, California, home for 38 years, spending the past two decades with her husband on a small horse ranch in the foothills. The surrounding golden grasslands, rolling hills, changing seasons, and expansive skies continue to inspire her work.

Horses remain an enduring influence in her artistic practice, alongside landscapes, cattle, cowgirls, cowboys, and other subjects drawn from the Western landscape. Moving between observation and intuition, Lisa seeks to capture more than the physical appearance of a subject. Her paintings explore the atmosphere, emotion, and personal connections that give a place or moment its meaning.

Through workshops, independent study, and continued artistic exploration, Lisa continues to develop a personal visual language that balances careful observation with intuitive expression. Her work invites viewers to slow down, look more closely, and discover a sense of peace, wonder, and connection with the world around them.

Artist Statement

For me, painting is about feeling as much as seeing. I’m drawn to the quiet presence of a horse, the atmosphere of a landscape, or the way light transforms an ordinary moment into something meaningful. Through my work, I seek to convey a sense of peace and connection—a reminder of the quiet beauty that surrounds us and the bonds we share with the natural world.

Sometimes I begin with a feeling I want to capture. Other times, the feeling emerges as I paint, leading me somewhere I hadn’t anticipated. I allow intuition to guide the process, letting each painting evolve through observation, memory, imagination, and the unexpected discoveries that happen along the way.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, I move between realism and abstraction, using expressive brushwork, simplified forms, and the interplay of light and shadow to express more than the physical appearance of a subject. I’m drawn to what can be suggested rather than fully explained—to softened edges, disappearing forms, and the space between what is visible and what is left to the imagination.

Growing up around horses and living on a small horse ranch in the foothills of Bakersfield, California, have deeply influenced my artistic journey. Horses and the surrounding landscape continue to inspire me, offering endless opportunities to explore the quiet relationships between living beings and the places we inhabit.

Over time, I’ve learned to trust the painting process and recognize when to let go. Sometimes a painting becomes more meaningful through restraint—through what I choose not to add, what I allow to remain unresolved, and what I leave for the viewer to discover.

Ultimately, I hope my paintings offer a moment of stillness in a busy world. If they invite someone to pause, feel a sense of connection, or experience a little more peace, then the painting has become something beyond the image itself. It has become an opportunity to feel, reflect, and reconnect with the world around us.

“Life is full of inspiration—we just need to slow down and appreciate the beauty around us.”
